Biography
Dr. Permanand Soothar is an Instrumentation Engineer in the Department of Telecommunication Engineering at Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, a position he has held since April 2015, and currently also serves as Visiting Faculty at the Hyderabad Institute of Arts Science & Technology (HIAST), Sindh, since June 2025.
At MUET, he is in-charge of the Optical Communication and Radio Communication Laboratories, where he leads and co-supervises undergraduate final-year thesis projects, conducts practical and theoretical training on microwave and communication systems, and is responsible for the calibration, maintenance and procurement of laboratory equipment, alongside coordinating research instrumentation and experimental setups with faculty.
He completed his PhD in Information & Communication Engineering at Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST), China (2016โ2024), under a CSC Scholarship, specializing in Electromagnetic Field & Microwave Technology. As a Graduate Research Associate at NJUST, he designed and optimized millimeter-wave planar antennas using HFSS and CST, developed broadband high-gain Vivaldi and slot antenna structures, fabricated prototypes, and carried out VNA measurements and radiation-pattern characterization in an anechoic chamber, publishing extensively in IEEE, Springer, Wiley and MDPI journals.
Earlier, he completed an MSc in Innovative Communication Technologies under an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, studying at Aalborg University, Denmark, and holds an MEng in Telecommunication & Control Engineering and a BEng in Electronic Engineering, both from MUET.
His research interests span millimeter-wave antennas, 5G/6G antenna systems, ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas, Vivaldi and tapered slot antennas, metamaterials, gap waveguide technology, microwave sensing, phased arrays, and medical IoT and radar-based antenna systems. He is an IEEE Senior Member and a member of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S), IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Computer Society, and is a registered member of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC โ Electro/08913).
