Biography
Dr. Fahim Aziz Umrani is an Associate Professor of Telecommunication Engineering with 20 years of experience teaching and administering undergraduate and graduate courses. He combines a deep research background spanning optical and wireless communication, e-health and telemedicine, analog and digital signal processing, and photonics and sensor networks (wireless body area networks) with proven expertise in grant writing, patent development, project and program management, and staff development.
He earned his PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of South Wales (Glamorgan), UK, in 2010 โ one of the youngest PhD recipients in the province of Sindh, having earned the degree at age 28 โ with a dissertation on perfect difference codes in fiber-optic and wireless optical CDM/CDMA systems under Prof. Salah Obayya. He completed his B.E. in Electronics Engineering at Mehran UET in 2004, joining the department the same year and rising through Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor (since Feb 2012), including a term as Acting/Co-Chairman of the TL Department (2021โ2024).
Dr. Umrani is skilled in outcome-based education (OBE) accreditation methods across the PEC, CIEC, and NCEAC frameworks, and has led curriculum development for the B.E. Telecommunications, ME Telecom Engineering & Management, M.E. Communication Systems and Networks, MS Cyber Security, and PhD in Telecommunication Engineering programs at MUET.
Among his notable contributions: he developed and implemented the MUET Attendance Management System (officially adopted in 2019), reducing campus attendance-update time from 18 days to a single click; built a VoIP-based IP PBX overlay that turned MUET's wired network into a campus-wide wireless intercom system; and was part of the team awarded MUET's first-ever patent, for a secure physiological-data transmission system for wireless body area networks. He is also the founding Advisor of the first Optica (formerly Optical Society of America) Student Chapter in Sindh Province.
Over his career he has won 28 grants from agencies including IEEE, Optica, Ignite, HEC and Sindh HEC, secured 2 patents, completed numerous professional certifications, received 13 academic awards, and delivered 18+ invited talks, guest lectures and workshops โ alongside supervising 4 PhD students, 24 ME/MS students, and 200+ undergraduates.
