Prof. Dr. Abdul Waheed Umrani is a Professor in the Department of Telecommunication Engineering at Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, where he has served since 2012. He began his career at MUET in 1996 as a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010 before becoming Professor in 2012.

He completed his Ph.D. and M.E. in Communication Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2008 and 2002 respectively, both fully funded through competitive research scholarships from the Ministry of Education, Singapore. His doctoral research examined spatial diversity and beamforming performance for wireless communication systems, including channel modeling for CDMA2000 and OFDM-based WLAN systems. He earned his B.E. in Electronics from MUET in 1995, graduating as the University's Gold Medalist and Best Graduate, having held the first position throughout his four years of undergraduate study.

Between 2013 and 2015, Dr. Umrani took on a wide-ranging leadership role at Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Karachi, serving concurrently as Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Director of the CIRCLE research and entrepreneurship centre, and — on two occasions — Acting Vice Chancellor. During this period he helped establish four new engineering degree programs and secured their PEC accreditation, in addition to organizing major international conferences.

From August 2016 to October 2021, he served as Registrar of MUET, acting as custodian of the University's academic records and common seal, secretary to the Senate, Syndicate, Academic Council and Selection Boards, and head of the University's HR, Legal and Security sections. During his tenure he introduced computer-based pre-entry admission testing, oversaw the Pre-Entry Test process for over 11,000 undergraduate applicants, and chaired the School Management Committee and Board of Trust of Mehran University Higher Secondary Public School (MUPHS).

In 2012, Dr. Umrani was awarded an Erasmus-Mundus Post-doctoral Fellowship at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, where he worked on a propagation and communication experiment involving the Alphasat Aldo satellite, a joint ASI–ESA venture, and served as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Electronic and Information. His research interests span digital and optical communications over propagation channels, MIMO antenna systems and channel modeling, cognitive radio (spectrum sharing and cooperative diversity), and the social applications of ICT in health and education. He is a Life Member of the Pakistan Engineering Council and a long-standing member of the IEEE Communication Society.
