Dr. Umair Ahmed Korai is an Assistant Professor (BPS-19) in the Department of Telecommunication Engineering at Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, and the Coordinator of the BS Cyber Security programme. He joined MUET as a Lecturer in 2014 and was promoted to Assistant Professor in July 2020.
He completed his PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (2016–2020) as a Commonwealth Scholar. His dissertation, "Nonlinear Photonics with Applications in Lightwave Communications", was supervised by Prof. Ivan Glesk, Dr. Vladimir Stankovic and Dr. Michael Strain. He earned his M.E. (2015) and B.E. (2011) from MUET, with a master's dissertation on the effect of rainy conditions on free space optical links.
His research covers integrated photonics, free space optics, the Internet of Things and wireless communication. His work on modelling rain attenuation of free space optical links has been presented at the European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP). He has held research visits at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and McGill University (Canada).
He is an active volunteer with the IEEE Communications Society, serving as Chair of the ComSoc Karachi Chapter since 2024 and Advisor to the IEEE ComSoc MUET student branch. He has received the IEEE ComSoc Membership and Global Activities Contribution Award in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and mentors Commonwealth Scholarship applicants for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK).
