Umair Ahmed Korai

Umair Ahmed Korai Baloch (Senior Member, IEEE) received the bachelor’s and Master’s degree in telecommunication engineering and telecommunication engineering and management from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, Pakistan, in 2012 and 2015, respectively. In October 2016, he was awarded fully funded prestigious scholarship from Commonwealth Scholarship Commission to pursue PhD degree in optical communication from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom. He completed his PhD degree in January 2020.

He is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Telecommunication Engineering, MUET, Jamshoro, Pakistan. He has authored for many contributions to reputed international conferences and scientific journals. His current research interests include electromagnetic wave propagation through the atmosphere, both at radio and optical frequencies, photonic integrated circuits (PIC), silicon photonics, and nonlinear optical communication. He worked with different Erasmus Mundus (EM) projects in MUET, Jamshoro i.e., Strong-ties, EM INTACT, EM LEADERS and EM CAPRIO and awarded two-month EM-Intact staff mobility scholarship to perform research exchange visit at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. During his PhD degree at the University of Strathclyde, UK, he was awarded twice a 03-months exchange secondment (in total 06-months) via SENSors and Intelligence in BuiLt Environment (SENSIBLE) project at the McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He has also performed IEEE volunteering as a secretary of IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) Karachi section from July 2021 to Dec 2022. Currently he is an advisor of IEEE ComSoc MUET student chapter, and Vice Chair IEEE ComSoc Karachi Chapter since January 2022. He has been awarded many grants and awards like,

1. Awarded a grant of USD 9600 from IEEE EPICS with project titled as: Monitoring of Groundwater using IoT.

2. Awarded a grant of USD 5000 from IEEE SIGHT HAC Focused on Pressing Community Needs with project title as: Smart Tubewell for Energy Efficient Agriculture System (22-HAC-106)

3. Awarded a KA171 Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility for the year 2022-25 with University of Klagenfurt, Austria. The total grant for this project is Euro 18,240.

4. Awarded a grant of USD 1000 from IEEE for organizing a workshop on Internet of Things (2022)

5. Awarded a grant of USD 850 for organizing an IEEE R10 POCO (2022)

6. Won a 3rd price of USD 1000 for IEEE ComSoc Internet for All Competition (2022)

7. Received a membership development grant of USD 1450 for IEEE ComSoc Karachi Chapter (2022-2023)

He serves as a reviewer for various scientific journals (such as IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Springer Wireless Personal Communication). He is a life-time member of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and professional member of IEEE and few of its societies, i.e., ComSoc, Photonics, and Industrial Electronics Society. He has visited several international countries, including Switzerland, France, United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America, Spain, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.
