Workshop on Optical Fiber technology was conducted in optical Communication lab, Telecom department of MUET on 19th and 20th December 2016. 49 students participated in it. The workshop was inaugurated by the chairman, TL department. Mirza Muhammad Asif Baig, Senior Engineer OFAN, PTCL delivered the guest lecture outlining the PTCL transmission network and its topologies. He also shared his diverse work experience in PTCL and Etisalat Dubai. Engineer Hyder Bux Mangrio, conducted the next session. He introduced the optical fiber technology including optical waveguide characteristics and main features of optical communication. In the last session of the first day, hands-on practice was scheduled. Participants performed fusion splicing and took measurements with power meters.

On the second day of the workshop, first session was held by Engineer Hyder Bux Mangrio. He introduced the Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and its usage in the fault localization. Later participants performed the practicals involving OTDR. In the next session, Dr. Faheem Aziz Umrani, Associate Professor, CS department, MUET, gave the presentation highlighting the research avenues and research funding opportunities. His lecture was both informative and inspirational for the audience. In the last session, Dr. Abdul Latif presented power budgeting in optical networks.
