World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2017 (WTISD)
The Department of Telecommunication Engineering, Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Pakistan, in collaboration with IEEE Communications Society – Karachi chapter (ComSoc-Khi) celebrated World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 2017 (WTISD’17) on 17th March 2017. The ComSoc-MUET student branch provided student volunteer’s support for the successful completion of the event. This year theme given by ITU for the WTISD’17 is “Big Data for Big Impacts“.
The event started with a welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry, the Dean Faculty of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering (FEECE), who is also the chairman IEEE Karachi chapter. He talked about the role played by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the growth of Telecommunication Industry. He also discussed about the role of ITU in providing the social development of human kind. He said that the MUET has always been active in celebration of WTISD, even when telecommunication discipline was not started properly in MUET. Electronics department was first to collaborate with ITU and celebrate WTISD in MUET.
The chief guest, Dr. Taha Hussain, the pro-vice chancellor of Mehran UET said that FEECE faculty has been producing quality graduates in the discipline of telecommunication engineering for over a decade. He discussed how data generated every day from different information and communication technologies (ICT) has shifted from scale of giga bytes to very large exponent multiple of exabyte and petabyte. From there, he revealed the importance of big data in today’s life. He also shared introductory knowledge related to big data and it big impacts toward human life.
The WTISD’17 was also enriched of two technical guest lectures. First technical speaker of this event was Mr. Farid Ghori. He presented his point of view with respect to the growing ICT technologies and later on he talked about big data and considered it as one of the latest ICT technology. Along with big data, he also discussed other latest ICT technologies (i.e. Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, Intelligent Transportation system (ITS) and so on), and effect of these standards in wide range of industrial applications including: electrical energy, healthcare, transportation, information assurance, and many more.
In the second technical speech, assistant professor of Software Department, MUET, Dr. Shahzad Nizamani, presented his point of view with respect to the theme of ITU. He talked about the values of big data in data management and data processing. He also discussed about the importance of big data and its significance in the life of new era people. He also exemplified the role of Google in big data. The event gathered attendees from the academia of FEECE faculty, MUET, and provided them very important information regarding big data.
After technical lectures, in the closing ceremony, Chairman, Department of Telecommunication Engineering at MUET, Dr. Faisal k. Shaikh delivered vote of thanks and admired the informative talks delivered from the guest speakers. He also appreciated the collaboration of IEEE ComSoc to support ITU’s WTISD. He and Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry also presented shield to the respected speakers and chief guest of the event.
